Wow!! What a great turn out on Monday August 3rd 2015 to the After 5 Telehealth event, co-hosted with both the Waikato Telehealth group and the Health IT Cluster. With both food and venue generously sponsored by Waikato District health Board and WINTEC, all we, as the 100 attendees had to do, was enjoy the evening and we did.  Thanks to all of you who came along and supported it.

New Zealand Telehealth Resource centre (www.telehealth.co.nz) were very open handed  and have recorded all presentations. They will be available within the next week on the website.

The requirement of a successful event is an energetic and well informed Master of ceremonies, which we had in Graeme Osborne. Graeme is a great MC as he has such a wealth of knowledge and is also very skilled at listening to a presentation and then being able to make a closing comment, linking it to happenings nationally. He opened the evening buy providing a brief update on current telehealth happenings including the possible published date of the new National Health IT Plan.

Dr Robyn Whittaker spoke on research which is being conducted at UOA. This provided an insight in to a host of NZmHealth projects.

A recorded interview of Dr Anne Hendry by Dr Jo Scott-Jones GP in Whakatane was the third presentation. Dr Hendry is a geriatrician, in Scotland. She is the National Clinical Lead for Integrated care, a project which is being rolled out . As telehealth plays a large role in this, Dr Hendry provided an extremely valuable update on how it is used in this project.

This was followed by the Dr. Nigel Murray, Chief Executive of Waikato DHB, launching the new telehealth initiative being rolled out by the DHB and also announcing the appointment of a clinical director –virtual health care, which was DR. Ruth Large. Ruth will be great in this role, with her enthusiasm and imagination taking us into the future.

Ruth then closed the evening by talking about her journey in telehealth. What had drawn  her to  telehealth and why she had stayed.

These events are always fun to organise and run but I had thought that after three events this may be the last only to be told that they are now on the telehealth calendar and everyone looks for them!! Watch this space.
